'Pratyasha' (a Malayalam word, which means 'Hope') is a support group for children with cancer - a helping hand for families of children and young people with cancer.
Under the aegis of Paediatric Oncology Division of the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Trivandrum, Kerala, a support group – 'Pratyasha' was formed in April 2003 to support the affected families during illness and its treatment regime and also afterwards. 'Pratyasha' is a non-profit voluntary organisation registered (Reg no: T.829/2003) under the 1955 Tranvancore-Kochi Literary Scientific and Charitable Societies Act governed by an eleven-member Executive Committee.
Though the area of activity is the entire Kerala state, the beneficiaries will be selected mainly from those who seek medical care from the Regional Cancer Centre. The aim of the society is to extend a helping hand to paediatric cancer patients by identifying the needy and providing them with medicines, emotional support and helping in the rehabilitation of the cured. The organisation believes that it can bring a smile on the children's face with the hope of relieving some of the stress from the parents, may be for just a short period, or for lasting memories.
Why 'Pratyasha':
Because, every year more and more children are affected by cancer in our contry
Detection of childhood cancer is perceived as a death sentence for the child. Psychological boost up is essential to overcome the scare
Children with cancer and their parents suffer both emotionally and economically
Solidarity is possible and desirable and it helps to reduce the problems associated with long and difficult periods of treatment
The number of people successfully overcoming the illness is increasing
Financial back-up is all the more important
Long-Term Goals:
Make a network along the length and breadth of the state, helping cancer patients from all hospitals engaged in treating cancer, according to the availability of resources
Create awareness in school children regarding Cancer through February 15 -- 'International Day of the Child With Cancer' to accommodate a child under treatment in the class and rehabilitation in the school, generating finance through fund-raising events/shows to support patients as well as small funds through meager monthly donations
Volunteer of boarding for the benefit of these patients in the the vicinity of hospital
Publications/Bulletins to aid parents, (with useful information) of children with necessary information on illness
Active participation of governmental agencies to bring the unfortunate families under social security schemes including legislation if required
